Contribution points were removed from Rift in version 1.1. The game now simply checks to make sure a player participated and distributes loot appropriately. However, more loot is awarded for players who are present for more stages of the event. [1]
Previously, contribution points were given to a player when he/she was active in a Rift. The exact workings were never released, but the prevailing theory was that the more actions the player performed (abilities used, damage dealt and healing done), the more points the player earned. The more points acquired during a Rift, the higher quality the drop would be at the end of the Rift. Players had to compete against one another for loot, despite being "on the same team."
